New clash with soldier in Denham Town

-

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) is reporting that a servicemember was injured by a resident in the Denham Town zone of special operations (ZOSO) in Kingston on Monday.

According to the army, the soldier was attempting to conduct a search of the resident at a checkpoint and was attacked with a sharp object.

It says residents became hostile towards servicemembers while they were attempting to detain the individual.

The situation was eventually brought under control, the army said.

Tensions have been high in the ZOSO since Horaine Glenn was fatally shot by a JDF soldier on April 16.

Residents have alleged abuse from the soldiers, including the kicking of a pregnant woman who made aggressive advances. The JDF and Independent Commission of Investigations are probing the incidents.

There have been several clashes between soldiers and civilians, prompting a visit from army chief Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman, who said the JDF would hold its members accountable.’

The army is appealing to anyone with information on the confrontations or any other security matter to call the JDF tip line at 876-837-8888.
