Burger King supports fine arts students with Lois Sherwood Arts Scholarship

-

IN 2011, Burger King introduced the Lois Sherwood Arts Bursary to their annual scholarship programme, in honour of their company founder and renowned visual artist. The bursary is open to any exceptional student in need from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, and who is starting their final year of studies (any faculty). Through the years, more than 14 recipients have been awarded the bursary.

Burger King’s 21 years annual scholarship awards programme has awarded more than 300 Jamaican youth with over $50 million in scholarships, bursaries and book grants through the years. In 2022, the Lois Sherwood Arts Bursary is being upgraded to a full scholarship, valued at $300,000 for the recipient’s final year of study. The upgrade further anchors Burger King’s commitment to investing in the arts.

Sabrena McDonald Radcliffe, Burger King’s head of sales, marketing and corporate communications, said: “The Lois Sherwood Arts Scholarship is an important feature of our annual scholarship programme, because Burger King believes in empowerment through sports education, arts and culture. Supporting the education and training of arts practitioners is our way of reinforcing Jamaica’s potential to create a successful and world-class arts and entertainment industry.”

In 2021, the bursary recipient was Nevrona Campbell, final-year student pursuing a bachelor of arts in drama in education at the School of Drama. She was awarded $200,000 to assist with her tuition fees. Travis McDonald, a final-year student pursuing a bachelor of arts in arts management at the School of Arts Management, received an academic grant valued at $100,000 as the runner-up applicant.

Applications are now being accepted for the Lois Sherwood Arts Scholarship via the company’s corporate website: https://www.raljm.com/burger-king-national-scholarships. Criteria for all scholarships can be found on the website. The deadline for applications is Friday, June 24, 2022.
