The following events took place on May 20 in the years identified:
1956: THE ISSA Scholarship (Boys) for 1956 is awarded to Ralston Milton Nettleford, an undergraduate of the University College of the West Indies, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.
1969: The first fire engine to be made i n Jamaica goes on demonstration at Newport West. The engine is built by Kingston Industrial Agencies (KIA) Limited at 381 Spanish Town Road. One of the men behind the project, Mr S.C. Henriques, managing director of KIA, proudly mans the unit during the demonstration, which takes the form of putting out burning rubbish set on fire for that specific purpose. Built for Reve Jamaica Alumina Limited, the engine operates with both foam and water through its various dual purpose nozzles. (See related photo below)
1978: Vere Technical High School edges Queen’s School of St Andrew 8-7 in the final of the Colgate Palmolive All-Island Netball Competition among schools at the National Stadium courts. Goal shooter Grace Jackson scores two of Queen’s goals.
1983: A national crimeprevention programme in which the public, through various organisations, is to play an active role in ensuring its own safety, is launched by the Minister of National Security and Justice Winston Spaulding. Mr Spaulding describes the programme as “an important aspect of our security policy in which the public as individuals or thorough various organisations or bodies, play a very definite role from an informed, conscious and organised basis.”
