THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on August 2 in the years identified:
1945: Kingston experiences some of its hottest days of the summer as the mercury rose 2.5 degrees higher than the 92 degrees mark which had been the average in the weeks prior. It was 94.5 in the shade at 3 p.m. in the afternoon and the mercury kept at that level long enough to make city folks uncomfortable.
1963: Attorney General Senator Victor Grant invites Senator Douglas Fletcher to “come outside” as tempers flare during the debate on the bill to amend the Jamaica Social Welfare Commission Law in the Senate. Senator Fletcher was speaking about the danger of the Government wielding a big stick as it was likely that when the time came, retaliation would be the order of the day.
1969: Marilyn Elizabeth Taylor is crowned Miss Jamaica at a packed National Arena in Kingston. Sheila Lorna Neil places second while Heather Dawn Bachtetz is third. (See related photo below)
