JC rout Manning’s, STATHS manage Manchester
WESTERN BUREAU: A CLINICAL St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) nullified an in-form Manchester High School for a 1-0 win in their quarterfinal round match of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Champions Cup football competition at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz yesterday.
Manchester were not given the chance to play their usual direct transitional game as STATHS pressed them through the midfield. The urban team created a number of chances and tested the goalkeeper but went into the break at 0-0.
It took just four minutes for STATHS to take the lead from a Shakone Satchwell free kick.
Despite trailing, Manchester lacked the intensity required to better STATHS management of the game and it wasn’t until five minutes of regulation time left before they showed real urgency.
However, the urban team managed to stave off a wave of attack in the dying minutes.
Phillip Williams, coach of STATHS, said they got Manchester to play right into their hands.
“We looked at how the Manchester team played and set up ourselves tactically so that we can play the blocks. This would not give them the room to play their normal game and right into our hands,” Chambers said.
Williams applauded the character of his team that is still not in the best physical condition, while singling out Satchwell.
GOOD SHIFT
“The boys put in a good shift and despite playing with an upset stomach, Shakone (Satchwell) still came up big for us. This shows the character of the guys who a lot of them are still playing with the flu bug. To come out here and put in a steady performance against a good Manchester team is commendable,” Chambers said.
“He (Satchwell) is our X-factor player. We expect him to come up with those moments and today was a beautiful free kick. Unfortunately, today he was ill so we couldn’t see more of his quality,” he added.
Coach of Manchester, Johnoy Chambers, said his team had an off-colour day.
“I don’t know if it’s the occasion but the boys tried their best and it’s just one of those days where it didn’t come off. That’s how knockout games are, if you snooze you lose,” Chambers said.
In the second game, Jamaica College routed The Manning’s School 4-0, through goals from Kevaughn Wilson (40th), J’havier Lynch (67th), Jaheem Frazer (76th), and Maquan Aldridge (79th).
