Your efforts safeguard both human and animal health
WORLD VETERINARY Day 2024 celebrates the important role of veterinarians. This year, we celebrate under the theme “Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers”, emphasising the crucial link between animal and human health within the framework of One Health.
In the ongoing battle to safeguard both human and animal health, veterinarians emerge as frontline heroes. Their role in preventing and controlling animal diseases cannot be overstated. Beyond ensuring a steady and safe supply of high-quality protein, veterinarians significantly contribute to the welfare of both people and animals. I extend my deepest appreciation to our veterinary professionals for their dedication and hard work.
I take this opportunity to highlight the fact that zoonotic diseases pose a significant threat to public health as they can be transmitted from animals to humans, leading to potentially severe consequences for human well-being. Therefore, it is imperative for veterinary professionals to persistently educate the public, especially animal owners and producers, about the risks associated with zoonotic diseases and the importance of preventive measures. By raising awareness about the benefits of proper animal hygiene practices, and responsible animal handling, veterinarians play a crucial role in safeguarding public health. Through proactive education and intervention, we can mitigate the spread of zoonotic diseases and protect both human and animal populations from the harmful impacts they pose.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Mining proudly reaffirms its commitment to working with veterinarians, veterinary professionals, farmers, and other stakeholders. Through united efforts, we will continue the drive for herd health and disease prevention initiatives. These are meticulously designed to promote sustainable food production and realise the crucial goal of food security for Jamaica.
On this World Veterinary Day, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the Veterinary Services Division, the Jamaica Veterinary Board, the Membership of the Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association (JVMA), and all veterinary professionals for their continued support. Your efforts safeguard human health, animal welfare, food security, and food safety, positively impacting the lives of our farmers, processors, consumers, and communities alike.
