On which side is the grass greener?

-

“THE GRASS is greener on the other side,” a familiar adage used for what we do not possess. From childhood, we absorb this lesson, understanding that our desires often seem more enticing when they are yet unfulfilled. This age-old saying sheds light on the human mindset, where the allure of the unattained can lead to perpetual restlessness and dissatisfaction.

WHAT IS GRASS AND THE TWO SIDES?

The metaphor of grass represents the myriad aspirations and dreams that colour our lives. It delineates a boundary between our current reality and the realm of our desires, symbolizing the divide between what we have and what we wish for. It’s a natural inclination to set goals and aspire for more, but this longing sometimes overshadows the beauty and value inherent in our present reality.

The verdant greenness that captivates us on the other side is a result of consistent attention given to the other side. Similarly, the appeal of achievements, possessions, or relationships lies in the way we perceive, appreciate, and nurture them through our attention.

The pursuit of greener grass is not about dismissing our current blessings but about understanding that our perception and attention play a crucial role in shaping our experiences. While goals and aspirations drive us forward, finding contentment in the journey and appreciating what we have achieved are equally vital.

ATTENTION IS THE WATER!

“The grass is always greener where you water it” encapsulates this wisdom succinctly. It reminds us that our attention, the metaphorical water, as the power to transform our surroundings and our lives. When we focus our energy and attention on nurturing what we have, be it relationships, accomplishments, or personal growth, we create an environment that fosters growth, fulfilment, joy, and contentment.

Living in the present and being grateful for the moment is the key. It’s all about being able to see the joy that life has given in small things and embracing it wholeheartedly. Waiting to feel satisfaction and joy after reaching our goals destroys the beauty of the process of nurturing the goal and appreciating the journey. Each moment becomes an opportunity to water our own grass, cultivate gratitude, and find fulfilment in the simple joys of life.

In essence, the metaphor of grass reminds us that happiness and fulfilment are not distant goals, but a continuous journey of tending to what we have and cultivating growth. By appreciating the NOW, we make the grass greener on our side of the fence and nurture it with care and attention, we create a life that is vibrant, fulfilling, and enjoyable.
