Established in 1958 as the Institute of Technology to its current status as Jamaica’s university, UTech, Ja has claimed the designation of the institution of choice for work-ready tertiary graduates and leaders. It’s journey of transformation from the College of Arts, Science and Technology to a dynamic hub for technological innovation showcases the truly inspirational vision of the university’s leadership, faculty, and staff over its 65-year history.
With its mission to positively impact Jamaica, the wider Caribbean, and beyond through high-quality learning opportunities, research, and value-added solutions to government, industry, and communities, the institution has stamped its mark as a leader in innovation and technology. Your 2025 Vision to be the premier university in the Caribbean for work-ready leaders demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to education and societal transformation, which will take UTech, Jamaica to the next 65 years.
The outlined goals, ranging from pursuing excellence in academic programmes to fostering applied product-oriented research, highlight the comprehensive strategies employed by the university to fulfil its mission. Its core values of respect, integrity, excellence, innovation, team spirit, accountability, and service are guiding principles, ensuring a culture of inclusivity, ethical behaviour, and commitment to excellence.
I commend UTech, Jamaica for 65 years of unwavering dedication to educational excellence, with more than 100 certified programmes, diploma and degree levels, academic offerings and development modelled on English polytechnic, with emphasis on flexibility of approach, work-based learning, professional linkages, and several programmes franchised through partnerships with community colleges.
I am confident that the new President of UTech, Jamaica, Dr Kevin Brown, will guide and expand the technological advancement and national development at the university.
As you commemorate your 65th anniversary under the theme, ‘UTech, Jamaica Thrives at 65: Forging Technological Innovation Driving Development’, I urge all stakeholders to continue to highlight the institution as a model of the power of education, innovation, and dedication to national progress.
