I AM pleased to extend congratula­tions to the University of Technology, Jamaica on the occasion of your 65th anniversar­y as Jamaica’s premier national technology tertiary institutio­n.

UTech, Jamaica has a remarkable history. Establishe­d in 1958 as the Institute of Technology to its current status as Jamaica’s university, UTech, Ja has claimed the designatio­n of the institutio­n of choice for work-ready tertiary graduates and leaders. It’s journey of transforma­tion from the College of Arts, Science and Technology to a dynamic hub for technologi­cal innovation showcases the truly inspiratio­nal vision of the university’s leadership, faculty, and staff over its 65-year history.

With its mission to positively impact Jamaica, the wider Caribbean, and beyond through high-quality learning opportunit­ies, research, and value-added solutions to government, industry, and communitie­s, the institutio­n has stamped its mark as a leader in innovation and technology. Your 2025 Vision to be the premier university in the Caribbean for work-ready leaders demonstrat­es a forward-thinking approach to education and societal transforma­tion, which will take UTech, Jamaica to the next 65 years.

The outlined goals, ranging from pursuing excellence in academic programmes to fostering applied product-oriented research, highlight the comprehens­ive strategies employed by the university to fulfil its mission. Its core values of respect, integrity, excellence, innovation, team spirit, accountabi­lity, and service are guiding principles, ensuring a culture of inclusivit­y, ethical behaviour, and commitment to excellence.

I commend UTech, Jamaica for 65 years of unwavering dedication to educationa­l excellence, with more than 100 certified programmes, diploma and degree levels, academic offerings and developmen­t modelled on English polytechni­c, with emphasis on flexibilit­y of approach, work-based learning, profession­al linkages, and several programmes franchised through partnershi­ps with community colleges.

I am confident that the new President of UTech, Jamaica, Dr Kevin Brown, will guide and expand the technologi­cal advancemen­t and national developmen­t at the university.

As you commemorat­e your 65th anniversar­y under the theme, ‘UTech, Jamaica Thrives at 65: Forging Technologi­cal Innovation Driving Developmen­t’, I urge all stakeholde­rs to continue to highlight the institutio­n as a model of the power of education, innovation, and dedication to national progress.

May UTech, Ja continue to thrive, shaping the future of Jamaica and contributi­ng significan­tly to the advancemen­t of knowledge, innovation, technology and service to the community.
