An unwavering commitment to excellence through knowledge

-

I EXTEND heartfelt congratulations to our University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja) family on our 65th anniversary.

UTech, Ja prides itself on a legacy of ‘Excellence Through Knowledge’. The manifest function of this, our institutional mantra, has been witnessed by successive generations of students and leaders through our delivery of worldclass tertiary education and through our spearheading of groundbreaking initiatives which have brought value-added insights to government and industry for over 65 years.

I stand in amazement as I reflect on our impactful journey from 1958 as the Institute of Technology to becoming the University of Technology, Jamaica 65 years later. We have seen tremendous growth, starting out with just 50 students and four programmes, to now boasting a student population of over 12,000 and offering over 100 multidisciplinary programmes across eight faculties and colleges at the certificate, diploma and degree levels.

UTech, Ja has enduringly and reliably risen to the challenge of steering Jamaica, the Caribbean and the globe along a path of positive growth by catering to the holistic development of our students. We have produced over 60,000 work-ready graduates and industry experts in fields not limited to STEM, business, the arts, sports and technical and vocational education and training over the last six decades. Our illustrious graduates can be found blazing a trail of excellence locally and internationally in sectors including academia, engineering, architecture, medical science, law and ICT.

This is particularly why we are proud to be recognising this milestone institutional achievement under the theme ‘UTech Jamaica Thrives at 65: Forging Technological Innovation, Driving Development’.

As we reminisce on our numerous successes, we are also grateful to our pioneers, partners and donors for investing their time and resources in our programmes and initiatives, thereby helping us to realise our vision, which is “to positively impact Jamaica, the wider Caribbean and elsewhere, through high-quality learning opportunities, research and value-added solutions to government, industry and communities”.

The University of Technology, Jamaica remains committed to continuously positioning ourselves as a local hub for regional and global transformation and sustainable development through high-quality teaching, research and meaningful service for decades to come.
