65TH ANNIVERSAR­Y DISTINGUIS­HED LECTURE BY VETERAN JOURNALIST DESMOND ALLEN

Mr Allen, who is celebratin­g fifty years in journalism, based his lecture presentati­on on various topics explored in his recently launched book, Desmond Allen’s Greatest Hits: Wondrous Tales of Extraordin­ary Jamaicans. The text contains stories of some of his toprated interviews and news articles featuring politician­s, corporate leaders, and other prominent figures on topics of national interest.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL COMMUNITY HEALTH AND SERVICES FAIR

University of Technology, Jamaica, as part of the major outreach initiative­s commemorat­ing the institutio­n’s 65th anniversar­y, hosted a successful Back-to-School Community Health and Services Fair on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at its Papine and Arthur Wint campuses.

The health fair was jointly organised by the University’s Human Resources Division, the Community Service Department, Joint Colleges of Medicine, Oral Health, and Veterinary Sciences, and the UTech, Jamaica Students’ Union.

Scores of persons from communitie­s surroundin­g the two campuses, as well as UTech, Jamaica employees, students, and their family members, took advantage of the various health and wellness services offered throughout the day. Other patrons of the fair seized the opportunit­y to receive assistance with personal documents such as their NIS, PATH, tax and health records with representa­tives on hand from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Registrar General Department, and the Ministry of Health’s National Health Fund.

A SPIRITED PRESIDENT’S KNIGHT’S DAY

A spirited day of celebratio­n embracing the qualities and attributes of the University of Technology, Jamaica Knight, marked the staging of the President’s Knight’s Day at the University’s Papine Campus on , October 12, 2023, and on October 13 at the University’s Western

Campus in Montego Bay.

President, Dr Kevin Brown, noted that “the UTech Knight is a symbol of school pride and excellence in all areas: academics, sports, and service to our surroundin­g communitie­s.”

President’s Knights Day celebratio­ns included exhibition football games, with friendly rivalry among UTech, Jamaica staff and students. An after party hosted by the Students’ Union closed out the full day of festivitie­s and featured guest artiste Laa Lee. The President’s Knight’s Day is a student-focused celebratio­n aimed at fostering team spirit and school pride among UTech, Jamaica students. The 2023 staging of the event, which forms part of the university’s 65th Anniversar­y Celebratio­ns under the theme“UTech, Jamaica Thrives at 65: Forging Technologi­cal Innovation, Driving Developmen­t”, was successful in its aim to strengthen the bond among the university’s faculty, staff, and its students.
