SANDRA GRAHAM-MITCHELL

Grade five teacher extraordinaire

-

FROM A young age, Sandra Graham-Mitchell knew that teaching was her calling. Growing up with educators in her family – her grandfather and two aunts – and having had good experiences with her teachers, inspired her to pursue the profession, so that she too could shape young minds. Her son has even followed suit, serving as a parttime lecturer at a university.

“I love children and teaching,” said Mrs Graham-Mitchell.

Since 2008, Mrs Graham-Mitchell has been a dedicated educator at Dunrobin Primary, where she teaches a grade five class, preparing students for the Primary Exit Profile exams. To her, teaching isn’t just a profession; it is a deeply rewarding experience that brings fulfilment to her life.

She pointed out that a strategy she uses to help her students grasp the lessons she teaches is creating meaningful connections with them and making learning relevant to their lives.

“I bring real-life scenarios into the classroom, allowing my students to see the practical applications of what they’re learning,” she explained.

Through her supportive and engaging learning environment, she has been empowering her students to reach their full potential.

Beyond the grade five curriculum, Mrs Graham-Mitchell actively engages students in financial literacy as part of her role as coordinator of the JN School Savers’ Programme for her school since 2018.

Drawing from her own childhood experiences of having a savings account and her father’s wisdom about the importance of thrift, she consistently instils in her students the value of responsible money management.

“I bring real-life scenarios into the classroom, allowing my students to see the practical applications of what they’re learning.”
