“Mothers are like glue. Even when you can’t see them, they’re still holding the family together.” – Susan Gale

IN EVERY culture, across every continent, the celebration of motherhood transcends boundaries, uniting us in a shared appreciation for the nurturers, caregivers, and pillars of strength who shape our existence. And as the calendar turns its pages to the second Sunday of May, the world pauses, collectively acknowledging and honouring the profound significance of Mother’s Day.

Despite only being celebrated on one day of the year, Mother’s Day symbolises a lifetime of commitment, selflessness, and undying love. This day serves as an important opportunity to pause and consider the significance of maternal figures in our lives, rather than just an occasion to celebrate with extravagant presents and grand gestures.

Mothers play many different roles in our lives. From the soothing lullabies that lull us to sleep to the gentle reassurance that steady our shaky steps, they are teacher, confidante, and steadfast supporter.

Mother’s Day encourages us to reflect on the complicated nature of motherhood – the unnoticed sacrifices, the modest triumphs, and the deep tenacity that characterise the motherly spirit – even in the middle of the festivity and sentimentality.

It’s a day to acknowledge that, despite its enormous joy, parenting is a journey filled with times of strength, vulnerability and uncertainty.

Our mothers act as constant protectors, their love providing refuge from life’s storms as we traverse its ups and downs. On Mother’s Day, we offer not just gifts, but gratitude – a modest acknowledgment of the countless ways in which their love has shaped our souls and illuminated our paths.

Comfort, acceptance and support can be found in a mother’s love. It is a love that has no boundaries, no conditions and no end. A love that gets us through what would seem to be the hardest moments of life and proudly celebrates our victories.

So, this Mother’s Day, as people across the world pause to celebrate the timeless bond of motherhood, let us honour our mothers and motherly figures who continue to guide us along our journey.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, grandmothers and maternal figures who have graced our lives with their love and support.
