PROSPECT COLLEGE

-

PROSPECT COLLEGE, located in Prospect, western St Mary, Jamaica, stands as a testament to the vision of the late British baronet and Conservative politician, Sir Harold Mitchell. Founded in 1956, before Jamaica’s independence, the institution was created to train young Jamaicans for citizenship through a semi-military format. For the past 68 years, Prospect College has provided full scholarships to hundreds of young men, equipping them with discipline, integrity, and academic excellence.

Under the leadership of Principal Gregory Wint, the school continues to thrive, supported by the Mitchell Green Foundation’s benefactors, Messeurs Peter, Andrew, and Alexander Green. The institution offers a comprehensive three-year scholarship for boys aged 13 to 16, covering uniforms, residency, medical expenses, CSEC exam fees, and a daily stipend. The students live on campus, fostering a closeknit community and rigorous academic environment.

Prospect College’s impact extends beyond academics. It boasts graduates such as Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey, other members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, and other areas including the Jamaica Defence Force, and the correctional services. The curriculum includes cadet training, musical instruction, and participation in the school’s renowned marching band, which performs at civic events in St Mary and St Ann.

The students also work on the school’s farm, cultivating crops and raising livestock, further enhancing their life skills.

The daily schedule at Prospect College is designed to instill discipline and responsibility. Students start their day at 4:45 a.m. with physical training, followed by chores, breakfast, and a muster parade before classes begin.

Principal Wint expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the dedication of the school’s benefactors and the prestigious nature of the award.

“Our focus is on ensuring that each student excels academically and develops lifecoping skills. Discipline drives what we do every day,” Wint stated, “We are humbled and extremely grateful to the RJR/ GLEANER Communications Group for this special recognition.”
