Bail extended for man held with banking cards

ASt James man, who was allegedly found in possession of two banking cards that were not in his name, had his bail extended to March 12 next year when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Nineteen-year-old Thomas Young, of a Granville address, is before the court facing a charge of one count of unlawful possession of property.

The allegations are that, on September 23, two police officers saw Young conducting a transaction at a banking machine on Gloucester Avenue, in Montego Bay. Young’s behaviour aroused their suspicion and when he was approached, Young reportedly ran off but was chased and apprehended.

Young was subsequently taken to the office of the Area One Fraud Squad where a search of his person revealed two Bank of America visa cards, a Western Union card, and US$4,000 which he could not properly account for. He was arrested and charged.

“Is the file ready?” Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tai asked clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm, when the case came up for mention yesterday.

“The file is not ready, as we are getting statements and material from overseas and that is taking quite some time,” said Malcolm.

RM Tai subsequently extended Young’s bail until March 12, 2014.

“Tell your lawyer that this matter is set for the 12th of March,” RM Tai told Young before allowing him to leave the courtroom.
