Man accused of cabbie’s murder for court March 11

Hewitt Johnson, the main suspect in the January 9 murder of St James taxi operator Jeffery Nam had his bail extended until March 11 next year when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Thirty-one-year-old Johnson, a chef, from Pondside, Hanover, had his case deferred until March 11 after the court was told that the prosecution’s case file was still incomplete.

PULLED A FIREARM

The allegations are that on January 9, Johnson was a passenger in Nam’s Toyota Corolla taxi en route from Hopewell, Hanover, to Montego Bay, St James. Along the way, Johnson reportedly pulled a firearm and shot Nam in the side of the head. Nam later succumbed to his injuries at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

“What is the position with this file?” Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie enquired of Clerk of the Court Natalie Malcolm when the case was brought up for mention.

“The ballistics are still outstanding, and I will respectfully ask for a March date,” said Malcolm in seeking additional time from the court to complete the file.

“Is March 11 convenient?” Tie asked attorney-atlaw Stacy-Ann Young, who represented Johnson.

“Yes, Your Honour,” Young answered.

“Your bail is extended until March 11. You will come back here on that date,” Tie told Johnson.
