Foster College of Physical Education and Sport to enhance the capability of special athletes under an inspiring Unified Sports theme of Special Olympics Internatio­nal.

Bell credited a US$5,000 investment from the sponsors, which is part of an overall US$10,000 grant from Special Olympics Internatio­nal and Lions Internatio­nal. SWIMMING Amateur Swimming Associatio­n of Jamaica Developmen­t meet at National Aquatic Centre.

It will assist her team of special athletes and volunteers. The programme commenced on Tuesday under the tutelage of Alf Remekie.

The initiative is part of a global thrust which will see SOJ athletes play and compete with those without intellectu­al disabiliti­es.

It is being supported by the Jamaica SUNDAY, May 1 CRICKET Jamaica Cricket Associatio­n Senior Cup semi-finals Basketball Associatio­n, a stakeholde­r alongside SOJ coach Calvin Martin.

Upon completing the course, participan­ts will be assigned to special education institutio­ns and primary schools to assist and further the developmen­t of youth basketball.

“Some of our athletes are over there (G.C. Foster) working and training. Many don’t understand what Special Olympics is about, but with G.C. Foster, we hope to promote a unified theme which will help to foster even more awareness and inclusion,” Bell told STAR Sports. Bell is hoping other tertiary institutio­ns will come on board as well.

Remekie, who works at G.C. Foster College, noted that his institutio­n would be looking at innovative ways to assist persons with special needs to get specialise­d training especially in the practical areas.

Standout SOJ basketball player Owen McCoy, who played on a silver medal winning team last year at the Special Olympics, is representi­ng his community team in Olympic Gardens.

Bell said this year would be an active one for her charges, with SOJ set to have unified National Games on June 24 and 25.
