UWI FC hunt six in a row

- MARC STAMP STAR Writer

UWI FC are on a roll following five consecutive wins in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL). Tomorrow, the league leaders will seek a sixth consecutive win when they face lowly Harbour View FC at the UWI Bowl.

On Thursday, UWI whipped bottom-place team Boys’ Town 4-0 and improved to 19 points. They are highly favoured to pull off another home win against Harbour Views who are sitting in an unfamiliar 11th position in the 12-team table.

Goalkeeper Amal Knight, the team’s vice-captain, says that his team is very upbeat at this time.

“We had some aims and objectives. One was to get a certain amount of points in the first round of the competition, which we have achieved. Now, we want to continue the momentum,” Knight disclosed during the RSPL weekly press conference yesterday at Red Stripe, Spanish Town Road.

Knight spoke of the team’s title ambition in only their second season in top flight competition.

“Last season, we missed out by a point for a spot in the semi-finals. This season, we aim to do better. We were beaten 5-0 by Harbour View last season and that was humiliating. Harbour View are at the bottom of the ladder, but we don’t want to get complacent. We want to focus on ourselves and won’t take them lightly,” Knight added.

Knight apart, the Marcel Gayle-coached UWI will rely on captain and the competition’s leading goalscorer Rochane Smith who is on six goals, Dawyne Smith and Anthony Greenland.

Meanwhile, Harbour View’s head coach Ludlow Bernard is bracing for a tough away game.

“We are anticipating a very good game against UWI on Sunday. We had a very good game against Humble Lion that ended 1-1 last Thursday night, so we want to win this game as most of our points have been earned on the road,” Bernard said.

Harbour View will look to players such as John-Ross Edwards, Hugh Evans, Andre Messam, and Nicholas Beckett to stop UWI.
