Henry welcomes pre-CWG series
Sunshine Girls interim coach Sasher-Gaye Henry said that they will be taking the upcoming Quad Series very seriously as it forms an important part of their preparations for the Commonwealth Games.
The Quad Series includes hosts New Zealand, Malawi and Fiji and will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, from March 21-24, which is two weeks before the start of the Commonwealth Games which will be held in Australia from April 4-15.
“It is going to be a very important series knowing that this is the only preparation that we have before the Commonwealth Games,” said Henry.
“We are only sorry that it is so close to the Commonwealth Games because we really wouldn’t want it to be, but that was the only thing that was available for us,” she said. “However, it is very important that we go there and put on a good show and play extremely well going into the Commonwealth Games.” She added that the Sunshine Girls will be stepping up their preparations ahead of the Quad Series, immediately after the holiday break.
“Everything will be up a notch because we have to increase it (training) based on the tournament that we will be going into, and the time that we have left for our preparations,” said Henry.
“The girls will not have any time off, but this special holiday and so training will continue right after this festive period,” she said. “Going forward, the training will intensify because even the days that they train will increase.”
HIGH SPIRITS
Henry also noted that the Sunshine Girls are still in high spirits after winning silver at the Fast5 World Series in Australia in October, but she said that the Quad Series and Commonwealth Games are going to be a lot tougher.
“We are very happy for the silver medal at the Fast5, but now it is a totally different game because the preparation has to be different and the whole game structure and strategy have to be different,” Henry said.
“We are very confident at the moment, but we know that we have to put in a lot of work because it is not going to be like the Fast5 game,” she said.
Henry and Marvette Anderson were appointed interim coaches following the resignation of Jermaine Allison McCracken in July.
