Injury a big blow, says Kelly
“Iam really devastated and really gutted.” Those are the words of former Sunshine Girls captain Malysha Kelly, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament, grade three tear, in her left knee.
Kelly, who was scheduled to represent the Southern Steel in this year’s ANZ Championships, told STAR Sports from her base in New Zealand that the injury is a very tough to deal with.
“It is a big shock to me, it’s a big blow because 2018 for me is a really big year in terms of things that I have planned,” said Kelly.
“My new season starts in May and the Commonwealth Games is coming up in two weeks and for this injury to happen so close, is definitely a big blow for me,” she said. “But there are things that you can’t control as an athlete and this is one of them.”
DURING TRAINING
The 27-year-old Kelly picked up the injury during a training session with Southern Steel on February 27. She is expected to miss next month’s Quad Series in New Zealand as well as the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
Kelly noted that because her knee is still swollen, the doctors have yet to decide when she will compete the surgery. She also stated that she has received a lot of support from national teammates.
“The knee is still swollen and so I can’t do the surgery as yet and so I just have to wait until it goes down before I can do any surgery on it,” Kelly said. “I have been getting support from the girls because they have been there for me. I know that they were looking forward for me to be there with them for the Quad Series and Commonwealth Games.”
