We learnt our lesson ...Finlayson promises W’house improvement for next season

Now that the memories of the defeat in the final of the Red Stripe Premier League have begun to fade, Captain of Waterhouse Nicholy Finlayson said he is already making plans to build on the momentum the side generated this season, in order to be crowned champions next year.

Finlayson’s side lost the final on penalties to Portmore United, 4-3, after failing to capitalise on a number of clear chances.

“I think we have learned a lot over the last season. A lot of ups and downs we had, but it taught us a lot. We can build on that momentum to go one further next season and win the title,” Finlayson said.

After the first round, Waterhouse was sitting in 10th position and was staring relegation in the face. A coaching change seemed to have done the trick for the Drewsland-based team, as their season turned around after Glendon ‘Admiral’ Bailey was fired and Donovan Duckie took over.

Finlayson praised Duckie for changing the team’s culture, which he attributes to their successful run late in the season.

“He came in and he found a way to get us to build the vibes and we just grew from strength to strength,” Finlayson said.

He said in retrospect, they lost the final because they failed to get going early in the game.

“We started off a bit slow and we were not clinical in front of goal,” Finlayson said. “But we are happy for the experience and I think it set us up well to win next year.”

He said that the team will retain most of the players for next year and with a few additions, Waterhouse will be the team to beat.
