Orlando Sinclair makes directorial debut

-

First-time theatre director Orlando Sinclair is looking forward to his directorial debut with the ‘Young and Wreckless’, a play that tackles the salacious ‘Lolita complex’. This refers to a situation in which an older adult male is attracted to an underaged girl, and the play explores the consequences that come from such a taboo relationship.

Although the play takes on a sensitive subject, Sinclair believes that through excellent performances, good writing and an emotional plot, Young and Wreckless can assist the society to wrestle and come to grips with this phenomenon.

“I know the audience will enjoy it because the story is real life with a lot of twists – young girl, older man, the challenges of that, especially the taboo part where it is frowned upon by society. I am getting great feedback from clips sent out. The actors are professional, and I am getting support from them to tackle this topic with humour and sensitivity,” he said.

Sinclair, who has a history in reggae music production and has worked with icons such as Beres Hammond, has previously worked as a producer on several plays, including Bad Breed and Bashment Granny 3.

He has leant heavily on the talents of his friends in the theatrical arena as he takes his first stab at directing.

“I draw inspiration from the characters in the place. Sometimes I go to Trench Town and get inspiration from the residents who tackle such topics daily. I get a lot of support and advice from Dahlia Harrison, Volier Johnson, David Tulloch and Michael ‘Stringbean’ Nicholson,” he said.

Young and Wreckless opens on June 22 at the Phoenix Theatre in New Kingston.
