Young act trying to set positive example

-

Encouraged by his mother who sings on her church choir, 20year-old David Bennett is using music to influence youths to choose positivity.

Bennett, who goes by the name ‘Shamba’, has been doing music for the past five years.

Though born in Kingston, Shamba spent most of his childhood years in Montego Bay. He recalls having an interest in music at a tender age.

“I start deejay when was five — railing the crowd, big people, everybody,” he said.

Now an adult, Shamba has been promoting his song, School Yutes Are The Future, at institutions across the island.

“I don’t want di school youths dem to make any mistake. I want them to focus, stay in school and have respect for each other and those set above them,” he told THE STAR.

He explained that the song was conceptualised while he was a student at Spot Valley High School.

The track tackles the harsh realities faced by students as a result of their choices, some of which Shamba said he experienced as a youngster.

“I see school students get stabbed and girls get pregnant early and drop out of school. It’s a disgrace,” he said, while thanking his two younger brothers, who have been instrumental in sharing his music in their school community.

Confident that he is making positive music, Shamba said that he simply desires more support.

“I not really getting the forward. I would like to get some more views and attention. The attention I am seeking is not a bad attention because I’m doing positive things and working for it,” said Shamba, who is also a marketer at Supreme Chemicals Ltd.
