Harbour View youngster Magee compared to club legend

- AKINO MING Staff Reporter

Now that he is out of school, Tyreek, Magee the former Jamaica College standout midfielder, who now plays for Harbour View FC, is looking to stamp his authority in the Red Stripe Premier League.

He has shown signs of doing that in his first outing for the season against UWI FC as spectators have drawn a comparison with former Harbour View midfield maestro, Jermaine Hue.

Magee and national representative Peter-Lee Vassell strung together a series of passes in the first half of the match that created a lot of problems for The University team in a match that ended 2-2.

While Magee enjoys being compared to one of the club’s most outstanding players, he said that he is focused on improving in order to achieve his goal of playing overseas.

“It is really nice that they are comparing me to a great player like that, but I am just really focused on improving my game so I can achieve my goal,” Magee said. “I think I could have done a lot more today (Thursday), but it is the first game and I’m hoping to do better for the Monday night game.”

STEPPING STONE

He continued: “Myself and Vassell have been working on it, but it is not something that we planned. It just kind of happened. I am trying to use it as a stepping stone get to a higher level.”

Assistant coach of Harbour View, Fabian Taylor, recognised the improvement Magee and Vassell have made but said both players need to work on the defensive side of things in order to take the next step. “Magee has to write his own chapter now and not let the praises get to his head. He has immense potential as a midfielder, but, as we know in the world of football now, potential doesn’t count for much. Nothing beats hard work, and if [you’re a selfish player] when you have the ball, you’re only going to play in Jamaica,” Taylor said.

“They complement each other well and created a lot of chances, but the transition to defence is little bit too slow.”
