- SIMONE MORGAN-LINDO STAR Writer

Luke Lane is in one of the liveliest in downtown Kingston. The avenue is also a shopping district for clothing and boasts a string of bars in very close proximity to each other.

Despite the high-spirited atmosphere, Luke Lane has a big garbage problem.

Some residents said that Luke Lane is not swept and the garbage truck passes through only once every week or fortnightly.

“Nuff night a Children Hospital we sleep with wi pickeny dem, because a bare running belly and vomiting them experience. This is where everyone throw them garbage, because no one will keep it in their home. When one community dumps their garbage one place, rubbish truck can’t just come one time a week, that just no make no sense,” said one of the woman, while clutching to an infant.

BUSINESSES AFFECTED

The stench is evident and swarms of flies circulate the dump which sits almost opposite to Jackson Pub. Operator of the bar, Winston Jackson, said garbage heap sometimes affects his business.

“There are a lot of flies there, so I have to disinfect a lot to prevent them from entering the bar. I would really want to see the truck come even twice a week because this is a health hazard. We understand when they say they don’t have enough trucks and ting, but the bag a rubbish no look good. It makes the place unattractive, and no one no want to come for a drink and a stare on rubbish and flies,” he said.

The residents told THE STAR that their only request of the National Solid Waste Management Authority is that they remove their garbage more frequently.

“We know Government naah provide enough resources fi dem come every day, but God know we no like smell the stinking tings dem ... . We can’t keep on a run behind the dog dem when dem a nasty up the place; plus we waah Luke Lane look clean like up a Beverly Hills, too,” a resident said.
