Bailey targets 20 goals in Bundesliga

- LIVINGSTON SCOTT STAR Writer

Despite his slow start to the German Bundesliga season, Bayer Leverkusen star Leon Bailey believes he will score 20 goals before the 2018-19 season comes to an end.

Bailey has failed thus far to find the kind of form which sparked the interest of the football world last year, but he said is confident he will return to top form very soon.

The winger, who was in the island over the international break, told STAR Sports that although teams are preparing for him this season, he can make better decisions when he has the ball.

“I wouldn’t say I had a bright start last year either. Last year, I was kind of the same start I had. But the season is still early, and we have a lot more games to get back on our feet. After a couple wins in the Europa League, we got a couple wins in the Bundesliga as well. But we have to improve more, I am sure we can do that in the coming games,” he said.

BE FOCUS

“Yes, I have received more attention but that hasn’t affected my season. It’s just for me to be more clever when I am on the pitch. A lot of teams have two people on me most times, but it’s for me to be clever and focus on making the right decision at the right time. So it (extra attention) is not stopping me. No, it’s just what I do,” he insisted.

Bailey registered 12 goals last season and six assists, and after nine matches this season (seven in the Bundesliga and two in the Europa League) he has netted two goals and no assists. But although he has been a bit slow out of the blocks this season, Bailey has set his targets and is confident he will be back to his best soon.

“I believe in myself. I just have to work harder than I worked last year. I am sure with hard work it will come back as soon as possible. I am doing everything to get back on my top form and my main focus is to score and assist as much as possible this season. The target is to score at least 20 goals, and I will get there because it’s a long season. I believe in myself and the team,” he added.
