SFP Six-A-Side off and running
The sixth staging of the Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (SFP) Six-A-Side Football Competition kicked off last Saturday with the customary dress parade, and first time entrants Ewarton were declared the winners with Eurotrend in second, and Angola, last year’s winners, in third.
In the opening games played in Zone A, three-time league defending champions Eurotrend and Ewarton played to a 0-0 draw. The clash between St Aubyn and Checkers also ended goalless.
The competition continues tomorrow with four matches. In Zone D, Legacy play Angola at 2 p.m., and at 3 p.m., Malhatra host Young Strikers; while in Zone E, One Love Strikers play Moscow at 4 p.m. and Zero entertain Ashoka at 5 p.m.
GREAT TURNOUT
Twenty teams, divided into five zones, A to E, are hunting top spot in the competition. Teams will play each other once in a round-robin format with the winners of the five zones, and the three best second- place teams, advancing to the knockout round. The final is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 1, 2018.
Host of the event, double Olympic 100 metres gold medallist Fraser-Pryce, is happy with the support the competition has received.
“It was a great turnout and you could hear and feel the camaraderie of the people of the community, which is one of the goals of this project. This event has become a staple on the calendar for the Waterhouse and neighbouring communities, and persons look forward to the competition,” she said.
Title sponsor is Nike, along with telecommunications giant Digicel and GraceKennedy, for whom Fraser-Pryce is an ambassador, Wisynco, through their product WATA, and new sponsors J. Wray & Nephew and Red Bull.
