Thornton salutes model citizens

-

The lives of several Thornton community members were touched on New Year’s Day, thanks to the effort of Pauline Grant.

Grant, who is from the community but now lives in Franklyn Town, Kingston, said her journey to touch lives didn’t start overnight.

“I am the type of person with a great passion for other people’s lives,” Grant said.

Grant hosted a cookout two years ago and Care Group Ministry in the Cayman Islands paid $14,000 for 14 meals to be given to needy people.

“I told them this money would be better used to provide special meals for the homeless,” explained Grant, who said she always wanted to do something like this.

“I was able to feed 97 people on New Year’s Day 2018 in downtown Kingston,” said Grant, who also hosted back-to-school treats in Kingston.

Lavern Christie, who for months watched Grant’s amazing contribution, invited her to do something in Thornton.

It was from this that Grant and her support team were able to host a dinner and awards function for the senior citizens. Several young people from within the community joined to play roles, some as chefs, waitresses, while others provided beautiful entertainment.

Some of the awardees were Paulette Powell (early childhood teacher); Lorene Clarke (early childhood teacher); Sorrett Farquharson (health aide nurse); Denise Skyers (educator, justice of the peace, member of the Thornton community group); Lorene Clark (educator); Edith Josephs (postmistress and justice of the peace); Alfred Bedward (of the sugar industry); Maudlyn Harriott (educator); Reuben Harriott (steam presser); and Jubert Josephs (shoemaker).

Stafford and Ionie Brown were given a special award for being a model couple in the community.

Stafford Brown described the evening spent as a “wonderful time here in Thornton.”

“It’s so good to know this community has seen us as the role models for the community of Thornton.”
