Parkes agrees new terms with Sligo Rovers

- - Gregory Bryce

Flying under the cloud of obscurity, Jamaican international Romeo Parkes has been making waves in the League of Ireland Premier Division and has recently completed a new deal with his current club Sligo Rovers FC which sees him staying until 2020.

The deal, which was announced on Monday , confirms that the striker will be a resident at the Irish club for yet another season after he initially joined them earlier this year in January after a move from American outfit Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

Manager of Sligo Rovers FC Liam Buckley confirmed the agreement and welcomed the move, stating that Parkes had become an important part of the team and has performed well so far.

MULTIPLE TEAMS

Parkes has been a welltravelled player both locally and internationally throughout his career. He has represented local teams such as St George’s SC, Highgate United, Tivoli Gardens, Boys’ Town, and Portmore United. He has also played for Isidro Metapan in El Salvador.

The player gained infamy, however, in 2016 when in a match against New York Red Bulls II in the United Soccer League (USL), he aimed a heavy kick to the back of defender, Karl Ouimette. Following his actions, his contract was immediately terminated and he received a global ban from FIFA.

Parkes had later apologised for his actions to the player he had injured and after receiving his ban, feared that would have been the end of his career.

“I was really zoned out and when I got back to the locker room I thought about everything and knew it was very serious. I cried for days but I’m over it right now. I did the action so I had to pay for what I did,” the player said at the time. “I was thinking the worst - that I could be banned for life. I was hoping for a second chance. I got it and I’m hoping to make use of it.”

Parkes made four appearances for the Jamaica team, scoring a single goal against Cuba in 3-0 back in 2015.
