September 26 date for motorist on bribery charge

ASt James man who allegedly tried to bribe police officers to avoid getting charged for motor vehicle infractions is to get a lawyer before his case returns before the St James Parish Court on September 26.

Albert Campbell is charged with breaching the Corruption Prevention Act. He was given the return date and had his bail extended by Judge Kacia Grant when he appeared in court last Wednesday.

Allegations are that on July 31, a police team was conducting vehicular checkpoint duties when Campbell was seen soliciting passengers.

The officers approached and informed Campbell that he would be charged for obstructing traffic and operating contrary to the terms of his licence.

Campbell reportedly asked what he could do to help himself, then went to his car and got his documents to give to the lawmen.

The documents were opened and J$5,000 was seen inside, following which Campbell was charged with attempting to bribe the police.

“Do you have an attorney?” Grant asked Campbell after the allegations were outlined.

“No, Your Honour,” Campbell.

“Do you intend to get one?” asked Grant.

“Definitely, because everything is a lie,” Campbell answered.

Meanwhile, the prosecution revealed that its case file was ready and the matter could proceed to trial.
