Magran’s creative juices flowing

“The ‘granny voice’ was inspired by veteran artistes like General Degree, and being the jovial person I am from school days, I was always making light like that but never tried changing up my voice to record. I only decided to recently.”

With a recording style that mimics that of a 1990s General Degree, Magran is attempting to stand out in the crowd of recording artistes.

He also believes that he has mastered the art of using the ‘granny’ style of vocal in his music.

“The ‘granny voice’ was inspired by veteran artistes like General Degree, and being the jovial person I am from school days, I was always making light like that but never tried changing up my voice to record. I only decided to recently,” Magran told THE STAR.

Approximately three years ago, he released a single titled Bad

Grandson. “It wasn’t mixed properly and so I teamed up with a producer to make a refix of the song and rerelease it,” he said.

The Bad Grandson refix is a comedic satire in ode to General Degree, who Magran, given name Richard Rose, says he is yet to meet. He also released Stay Home, a message for people to follow the COVID-19 protocols.

He says that his creative juices are flowing, “finding more topics to perform in a similar way but at the same time I want to show my talent.”

“It’s not just about the ‘ granny voice’. I put my all into writing a song and anything I do, it has to be fully constructed,” he said.

Magran also balances recording, and his label MG Records with another business. He makes natural juices like tamarind and stinking toe, beetroot, pumpkin seed and oats and peanut punch. The sixyear-old venture started out with Magran riding around Portmore, where he is based, selling juices out of a plastic bag.

“A friend of mine taught me to make peanut punch and I added my own touch of spices to it. I was unemployed and I remember dropping few bottles into a scandal bag to sell and a lady telling me to invest in a bucket or cooler,” he said. And just as that venture has progressed, “Is the same way I plan to build on my talent as a recording artiste”.
