Brewster breaks duck to help Sheffield advance

- LONDON CMC:

Rhian Brewster, whose father is Barbadian, has ended his long wait for his first Sheffield United goal as they beat League Two Carlisle United 1-0 in the first round of the English League Cup.

Brewster, 21, who joined the Blades from Liverpool for £23 million (US$31.8 million) last October, had failed to score in his first 31 appearances for the club, but gave the hosts the lead at Bramall Lane when he tapped in on 24 minutes on Tuesday night after Billy Sharp’s initial effort had been parried.

Sheffield United will be home to Wayne Rooney’s Derby County in the second round.

Brewster said on his social media site: “Been a long time coming. Special moment at the Lane.”

League Two Stevenage pulled off a surprise against Championship neighbours Luton Town, knocking them out after a penalty shoot-out and have drawn Wycombe Wanderers in round two.

The 90 minutes ended in a 2-2 draw with the Hatters having to come from behind twice, before being beaten 3-0 on penalties with Luther James-Wildin, who is eligible to represent Antigua and Barbuda, among the successful spot-kick takers.

Two players with Reggae Boyz eligibility, Jordan Cousins and Scott Sinclair, were also on target.

Wigan progressed to a home meeting against Bolton Wanderers after beating Hull City 8-7 on penalties after the game ended 1-1.

The first 15 penalties were all successful until Manchester United loanee Di’Shon Bernard sent his effort over the bar for the Tigers and Cousins stepped up to win it.

Sinclair, meanwhile, scored twice – in the 45th and 81st minutes – as Championship side Preston North End advanced with a comfortable 3-0 victory at League Two Mansfield Town and now face a trip to League One Morecambe in round two.
