National striker Williams leaves Egyptian club for Kuwait

National striker Romario Williams’ eight-month stint in Egypt has come to an end.

Williams, 27, has signed a deal to join Kuwait club Qadisia for the upcoming season. The move ends his stay at Egyptian club Al Ittihad Alexandria, where he signed a one-and-a-half yearlong contract last December and partnered with fellow national team-mate Damion Lowe.

Williams scored five league goals in 23 appearances, but has not been part of the squad since May 28 when he played the full 90 minutes in Alexandria’s 2-0 win over Aswan SC. In an Instagram post yesterday, Williams thanked the front office staff as well as the team for the support given over his time in Egypt and says he is looking forward to making the most of his new home in Kuwait.

“I want to personally thank club president Mr (Mohamed) Mouselhy and all the members of the management and technical staff at Al Ittihad Alexandria along with its amazing fans. It was a memorable six months representing such a historic club and the city of Alexandria,” Williams said.

“I am excited to get to work with my new team-mates and I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my career.”

His departure from Egypt was not a smooth one, however, as Mouselhy reportedly said that Williams, along with Emmaniel Okwi, left the club without notifying the board. In a July 6 report from reporter Ahmad Gamal Ali of

KingFut.com, Mouselhy said that the club filed an official complaint against the two players after not returning to the club following the international window.

While Romario Williams was named to Jamaica’s 60-man 2021 Gold Cup provisional list, he did not make the final roster and was not in the team that travelled to Japan in June for their twogame international series against Serbia and the Japanese Olympic team.

This will be Williams’ 10th club of his career, the majority of which was spent in the United States in Major League Soccer, as well as spells in the United Soccer League.
