Cows get potty training

-

Cows are being given potty training in a bid to save the planet. Researchers in Germany have given the animals stalls branded MooLoos that will prompt calves to relieve themselves for treats.

Scientists claim that the experiment could slash emissions of ammonia, the greenhouse gas produced by the waste from cattle.

Animal psychologist Dr Jan Langbein said: “It’s usually assumed cattle are not capable of controlling defecation or urination.

“Cattle, like many other animals or farm animals, are quite clever and they can learn a lot.” Langbein added: “Why shouldn’t they be able to learn how to use a toilet?” Urine and faeces from cows combine to create ammonia but the team claim that the loos will enable waste to be collected or treated. The study follows a similar scheme in New Zealand, which found that potty training cattle reduced nitrogen emissions from their dung.
