I want to go on my own

-

Dear Pastor,

My story is so long, I hope you have enough time to read it. I am 30 years old and I am working with a company for 10 years. There is no future in this place, but my husband does not want me to leave. It is just a family business. The business is owned by his brother. I told my husband over and over that it is time for me to move on. He said that it is not wise for me to leave and go to another company and start all over, but I don’t see any future here for me.

I am not complaining about my salary because it is good, but I do not have any future here. I would like to start my own business, but my husband is not in favour of that. He prefers if I go to work at nights, come home and stay with my children, but I would like to own my own business.

How can I get my husband to see that I am keeping back myself by working with his brother in his family business? I am not ungrateful, because when I left university they offered me a job, but I am here in the same position as I came.

I would like to hear your opinion, and I thank you for reading my letter.

C.S.

Dear C.S.,

You have to decide what you really want for yourself. You are not happy in your present position. You want to be an entrepreneur. You want to own your own business and nothing is wrong with that, but I also see your husband’s position. He does not want you to leave your present job and go on your own and not be successful, because starting a business can be very rough. Your husband probably doesn’t want you to be in competition with his brother, but there are many people in this country who have left lucrative jobs and have gone on their own and have done very well. I believe that it is possible for you to do the same.

Your husband is fearful that you will not do well. You have the training, you have the courage and, I dare say, the dedication. You know that your children will not suffer if you launch out on your own. While I am saying be cautious about going forward with your plans, I will not discourage you. Before you take the plunge in starting your own business, seek other advice.
