Baby Ice gets creative

- SADE GARDNER Staff Reporter

The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly impacted the entertainment sector, but dancer Baby Ice is making the most of the period by expanding his brand.

He made his debut in the YouTube dramedy series, The Bartender, this summer as the character Gunbag, a street gangster whose nerdy persona is effective in deceiving and planning the downfall of his rivals. The character is from the 2012 movie, Kill Dem Hard

and Done, created by Cornelius Grant’s Good Vybz Entertainment of which Baby Ice forms part.

“A lot of persons really gravitate to the nerd gangster thing, so with that I said let me try a split personality; let me do Gunbag on TikTok,” Baby Ice told THE WEEKEND STAR. “I’ve been doing some TikTok videos and they’ve not been as viral as I would like, but I’m getting great feedback.”

Baby Ice’s acting pursuits are being encouraged by Grant, as well as his loved ones who recognise his talent.

ACTING SKILLS

“It’s really my manager who brought me into the acting thing. Ever since I played the Gunbag character, he said I really have some acting skills because I play the character well. I’ve been in different music videos as well, the most recent being Mr Vegas’ My

Story, so I’ve been able to bring out my acting skills in my dancing for whatever role is needed.”

Music is another field he’s ventured into during the pandemic. He’s gearing up to release a song about his dance move ‘ Simple as You See It’ to be produced by Neutron Obliv. He hopes to release it by his birthday on October 30.

“Music is something that I’ve always loved to do but I always said I never had the voice for it,” he said. “I can’t limit myself; nothing tried, nothing done.” Baby Ice’s music debut came in 2018 as part of Sanjay’s song Plucky, for which he also created the song’s dance. His pursuits unravel while he tends to his nineto-five job in the BPO sector, and he strikes the balance with time management and help from his team.

“The pandemic put a lot of pressure on us as entertainers, but I have some qualifications from Jamaica College, give thanks, so I can always get into a nineto-five. Whenever I have a day off or I’m free, I do my dancing. I also teach dance fitness classes at Rafael’s Gym on Waterloo Road every Thursday, so that keeps me active and fit. I do my early morning jogging to stay fit because I gained a few pounds because of the pandemic, but the greatest thing is just to keep fit and balance everything.”

He is further motivated by his fiveyear-old daughter and nine-year-old son.

“I have to just be the best person and human so one day they can say, ‘You know my dad really did a lot for me’. I might get busy at times, but at least they’ll see their father doing big things.”
