Bad road irks St Catherine residents

Residents of a section of Victoria district, near Linstead in St Catherine, are crying out for repairs to be made to their road.

“What we have here is a rugged terrain and not a road,” ShaunaKay Nelson, a shopkeeper, said. “What you are looking at is the better part of what is left of the roadway. It is very bad and needs urgent attention.”

The sports utility vehicle being used by the news team was challenged by the many gaping potholes as it navigated the journey into a section of the community known as Bongo Town. Several vehicles were seen parked along the roadway.

“We need to have the road fixed as vehicle owners and operators are finding it difficult to do deliveries,” Delmer Brown said.

“We have to be paying more for fares if the vehicles do turn off [and travel this way].”

Councillor for the Linstead division in the St Catherine Municipal Corporation Herbert Garriques said he was aware of the horrible road conditions.

“It (the road) is simply terrible, which is a risk to even those who walk on it,” Garriques said. “It was on Thursday that I made representation for finding funds to fix that piece of road.” Garriques, a four-term councillor for the division, said the road conditions have worsened over the years.

“The residents deserve the road, but I am just awaiting the funding that work can be done,’’ Garriques said.

Residents said there is also a problem with inconsistent water supply, but the bad roads compound that issue as water truck operators fear traversing the thoroughfare.
