Mullings doing his part for Humble Lion

- DANIEL WHEELER Staff Reporter

Aconsistent goalscorer has been hard to come by this season for Humble Lion. However, striker Kemar Mullings hopes that he can be the catalyst for a late revival of his club’s fortunes, after a poor start to the Jamaica Premier League season.

Mullings, the STAR of Week 15, had a brace in their 2-0 win over defending champions Cavalier on Sunday, their first multi-goal game since February 1 when they drew 2-2 with Arnett Gardens.

The win was the team’s second of the season and their first since March 13 when they edged Montego Bay United 1-0 in a game that saw both teams receive red cards.

Mullings says that the coaching staff’s insistence on not overthinking in front of the goal has helped him find his form this late in the season. “They always tell me to, ‘Just shoot Mullings, shoot’,” Mullings told THE WEEKEND STAR. “When you have the ball in front of goal, just shoot, because anything is possible.”

That mentally was used in both goals as Mullings fired a low one-time shot that trickled into the back of the net for the opener. His second came as his first touch took the ball past a Cavalier defender and he fired from outside the box to effectively seal the game. It was not only his third goal of the season, but his third in the space of three weeks. Mulling says that it is a testament to the continued commitment he has despite a challenging season.

“I have been working hard in training so I know that my hard work is paying off,” he said.

Lion were the last team to win their first game of the season, waiting until the ninth week to get three points. After an up-and-down second round, they are unbeaten in their last three and are ninth with 14 points, six points away from the play-off places. Mullings says that the win has increased their belief that a play-off berth is not beyond them with seven games left in the regular season.

“We just have to work hard and stay focused and keep fighting until the end,” he said.
