Woman convicted the 12th time for larceny
Awoman with 11 previous convictions for larceny offences will know whether she will be imprisoned when she returns to he Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court for sentencing on May 25.
Marvalett McIntosh pleaded guilty to larceny from the person before Senior Parish Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montague in April after she was accused of stealing $65,000 from a woman’s purse last year. The money was repaid yesterday.
“The court will be guided heavily by the records and the 11 previous convictions,” Cole-Montague said.
“It tips the scale towards a custodial sentence. If she has previous convictions for larceny from the person and she is before me to be sentenced for the same offence, we really should be speaking about her being a habitual offender and perhaps have her indicted in the Circuit Court. But I am not going there yet, but I am saying that to say I think a custodial sentence might be appropriate on its face,” ColeMontaque indicated.
The senior judge had sentenced McIntosh on a previous occasion.
Meanwhile, in the matter to which she pleaded guilty, it is reported that last September, the complainant visited a store in downtown Kingston and had her shopping bag with her.
A worker in the store approached her and said, “Lady look in your multicoloured bag”. When she looked, her purse, which contained $65,000 in cash, was missing. She made a report at the Darling Street Police Station and one investigator visited the store where surveillance footage was accessed. This led to McIntosh being charged.
