DJ Kevy hits the carnival scene

-

Even though he studies at the University of Technology (UTech), DJ Kevy has managed to carve a niche for himself as an in-demand DJ on the soca music scene.

His recent sets at UWI Carnival and the GenXS Pump series saw DJ Kevy unleashing the latest soca treats, while leaving patrons musically satisfied. DJ Kevy, who has struck an undeniable chord with the younger soca music demographic, said that music began for him in his early days in his household.

“My older brother played different genres of music, so I was inspired from an early age. However, my DJ aspect began after fooling around with virtual DJ. I got more into it, and

I learnt the art of mixing,” said DJ

Kevy, given name

Kevon Reynolds.

He cites international DJs, including Calvin

Harris and David

Guetta, and local ones such as Kurt

Riley and ZJ

Chrome, as his go-to DJs for musical inspiration.

“I was in the fifth form at Wolmer’s when I realised that I was gaining all the skills of being a DJ, and I had all of this knowledge and people were approaching me to play at their events. So, it was then I said, ‘You know what? Let’s make this a career,’” DJ Kevy explained. The first event that he played professionally as DJ Kevy was at his school’s barbeque event.

“Music is a driving force for me. Music is life and it’s one of the greatest artforms. Music also gets me through the hardships,” said DJ Kevy. He said that what he enjoys most about being a DJ is realising the effect that you have on people through music, and being the individual who can be the source of release for people.

“Some come to the event with their problems; and for others it’s just an escape,” said DJ Kevy.
