Caribbean athletes produce at invitation­al meet

- MIRAMAR, Florida (CMC):

St Vincent & the Grenadines (SV) distance runner Shafiqua Maloney transporte­d her rich vein of form with a comfortabl­e win in the women’s 600 metres at the Miramar Invitation­al on Saturday in the United States of America (USA). The 25-year-old was one of four Englishspe­aking Caribbean athletes who won their events at the Ansin Sports Complex. Two-time women’s World Championsh­ips 400 metres bronze medallist Sada Williams, Jamaican sprint hurdler Tyler Mason, and Bahamian quarter-miler Alonzo Russell were also successful during the World Athletics Continenta­l Tour Silver event.

Maloney, the SVG women’s 800 metres national record holder, added the 600 national record to her accomplish­ments when she clocked 1:23.80 minutes.

Sadi Henderson was second in 1:27.81 minutes, and fellow American Ajee Wilson was third in 1:27.86.

Williams won the women’s 200 metres in 22.82 seconds from Ida Karstoft of Denmark, who finished in 23.01, and Kynnedy Flannel of the USA with 23.32.

Mason clocked 13.57 seconds to win the men’s 110 metres hurdles with American Eric Edwards taking second in 13.60, and Andrew Pozzi of Great Britain finishing third in 13.63.

Russell ran a season’s best 45.35 seconds to win the men’s 400 metres, finishing one-hundredths of a second ahead of Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic, with Wendell Miller of The Bahamas third in 46 flat.

Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake ran 10.28 seconds to finish second in the men’s 100 metres in a tight finish behind Courtney Lindsey, whose time was the same; while Andre Ewers clocked 10.43 to take third.

Jamaican Danniel Thomas-Dodd, the 2019 World Championsh­ips silver medallist, threw 18.72 metres and finished third in the women’s shot put; Chase Jackson of the USA won the event with 19.88, and compatriot Maggie Ewen was runner-up with 18.95.

Chanice Porter of Jamaica leapt 6.36 metres and finished second in the women’s long jump, two centimetre­s off the best jump of American winner Taliyah Brooks. Alysbeth Felix-Boyer of Puerto Rico leapt a season’s best 6.28 and was third.
