Princesses attend concert of ancient court music

Princess Aiko, the daughter of the Emperor and Empress, and her cousin Princess Kako attended a gagaku concert at the Imperial Palace on Saturday. e concert of Japanese Imperial court music and dance performed by the Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency was held for the rst time in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the 20-year-old Princess Aiko, it marked her rst o cial activity as an adult member of the Imperial family other than attending Imperial ceremonies.

Princess Kako, 27, is the younger daughter of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino.

According to the Imperial Household Agency, Princess Aiko made a request to attend the concert a er taking a lecture on traditiona­l performing arts at her university, Gakushuin.

e gagaku works performed included the dances “Ryo-o” and “Nasori.”

According to a guide, Princess Aiko expressed interest in the deep sounds coming from the large dadaiko drums.

EMPEROR HAS MEDICAL CHECK

e Emperor underwent an MRI examinatio­n on Sunday to see if there are any problems with his prostate gland.

According to the Imperial Household Agency, the MRI was scheduled a er the Emperor’s prostate-speci c antigen test revealed that the PSA level in his blood was slightly higher than normal.

e outpatient visit to the University of Tokyo Hospital in Bunkyo Ward lasted from around 9:30 a.m. to just a er 1 p.m. e 62-year-old Emperor was taken to and from the hospital by car. (Nov. 7)
