3. Plenty to do in the City

-

If you are tired of swimming, sunbathing or strolling along the boulevard, then head to the museums, of which Batumi has plenty, including the State Museum of Adjara, the Archeological Museum, the Museum of

Arts, the Nobel Brothers Museum, various art galleries and the Kemal Turmanidze Museum, a private museum founded by a wood-carver who recreated scenes of local life and had a wonderful collection of domestic items, clothes and utensils.

Make time to visit Batumi’s Dolphinarium. Shows take place twice a day (three times in summer) whatever the weather. The dolphinarium is open air, but the seating is under cover. The show is superb, performed by no less than eight dolphins as well as seals.

Another must-see place is the famous Botanical Garden, with one of the richest collections of plants in the world. The location is fabulous, as the garden is on high ground and appears to hover over the azure sea. This is a very beautiful place. You can easily spend a whole day walking around it, and many people do. There is a special spot by the sea where you can stop for a rest and even barbeque your lunch (if you were prepared and brought it with you). You can also stay overnight at the campsite. Another trip you shouldn’t miss is the Argo cable car that takes you to the highest point of Batumi. If possible, go at sunset. There is an observation deck at the top and a pleasant café.

If you like military forts then head to the Gonio Fortress, located 12 kilometres from the centre of Batumi. There is plenty here for visitors to explore, with reconstructions of antique military weapons and an opportunity to walk along the fortress walls.
