When you hear the word ‘petroglyphs’ in Kazakhstan, it is almost invariably followed by the word ‘Tamgaly’, but this is not the only place in the country in which you can find rock carvings. There are many examples in the Semirechye region, also known as Zhetysu or the Land of Seven Rivers.

Of course, the most famous and welldocumented rock drawings, known as petroglyphs, in Kazakhstan are those found in the archeological complex of Tamgaly. Here, over 100 monuments, including petroglyphs, ancient settlements, burial mounds and houses of worship, dating back to the period from between the middle of 1400 BC up to the beginning of the 20th century, have been preserved in an area of about 900 hectares.
