Demons are the lesser evil

Bali is not only the island of gods but also of demons. The Balinese present life as the fight of good with evil, both real evil and the not so very evil demons that live inside us. All the local mythology, philosophy and culture is dedicated to this conflict. You can go to various colourful costume dramas that illustrate the story, such as the one and a half hour performance by Barong dancers on an ancient stage in the village of Batubulan. The show involves an evil witch, good spirits, a hero and, of course, demons. Like any good myth, good will triumph. Another traditional show takes place at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana park, on the observation deck in front of the island’s famous statue of the god Vishnu. We went to the evening show starting at 17:00 and were amazed by the sparkling costumes, beautiful actresses and glorious sunset; the Balinese have a talent for turning everything into a holiday. There is something about this place that makes everything turn out well.
