In the three years since it was formed, the Kazakhstani band Ninety One has been catapulted into a world that has given them everything: runaway success, an army of admirers, half a million subscribers on Instagram, a feature film, a new image and now a step up to a new level.

In real life they are ordinary lads who like to fool around and have fun, but they try to look serious when answering questions. They take some care to express themselves clearly, in contrast to their image on stage and in photographs, which is of a group who break with convention, dye their hair fantastic colours, wear provocative clothes and perform with a wild energy.

ZAQ is Dulat Muhametkaliyev. The oriental sage of the group, he is a lively speaker who talks in metaphors and the band give him the right to speak on their behalf during the interview.

A.Z. is Azamat Zenkayev, the lead rapper. He doesn’t waste words.

ALEM is Batyrkhan Malikov, the main vocalist. He is the purest musician of the group as he graduated from music school specialising in the dombra.

BALA is Daniyar Kulumshin. He’s the youngest, which is how he got the nickname Bala, meaning young boy in Kazakh.

ACE is Azamat Ashmakyn, the only one who comes from Almaty, and he and Daniyar are the only two without any tattoos on their bodies.
