The Heritage of Turkistan
Today the speed of construction in Turkistan is impressive. A brand new airport has been built along with a stadium, parks with elegant fountains, apartment blocks and administrative buildings. This city, surrounded by famous ancient settlements, is being swiftly and elegantly modernised. Flyarystan now flies to the brand new Hazret Sultan International Airport in Turkistan from Nur-sultan and Almaty.
It’s no secret that most people who arrive in Turkistan have come to see the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. It’s not only a sacred site but also an awe-inspiring architectural monument of the 14th century that deserves an article in its own right, but today I would like to talk about the other places well worth seeing within easy reach of Turkistan.
ANCIENT SETTLEMENTS
For two thousand years people lived in the fertile valley between the Syrdarya River and the Karatau mountains. Around the city of Turkistan archaeologists have discovered a dozen ancient settlements. In the early Middle Ages there was a settlement called Kultobe, later known as Yassi, which surrounds the Khoja Ahmed Yasawi mausoleum. The site with its archaeological excavations and painstaking restoration covers an area of 27 hectares. An archaeological park is about to open so visitors can visualise the city as it was.
Shavgar, not far from Turkistan, is another ancient settlement. Tiles and parts of a plumbing system have survived to the present day. In the settlement of Sidak, archaeologists have excavated altars and found interesting items related to a preislamic cult.
The well-known ancient settlement of Sauran is still impressive as its outside walls have been preserved. Inside the ancient city there was a square and grand mosque and madrasah with swinging minarets that would have ranked with any other wonders of the world of their era. Arial photographs show the shapes of hundreds of houses, manors and irrigation canals. A complicated system of underground wells and water-pipes brought clean drinking water to the city from the mountain springs and brooks of Karatau, 10 km away. Only 3 km from Sauran is an even older settlement called Karatobe Sauran.
There are the remains of many other towns and cities around the Turkistan oasis, such as Ikan, Karnak, Karashyk, Zhuinek, Shaga and Koskorgan, all of which have so much to tell us about their former residents, their culture, technology, and the people they traded with.
PILGRIMAGE SITES
If you go past Karnak and turn right towards the foothills of the Karatau mountains, 45 km from Turkistan, you will find the Mausoleum of Ukash Ata, a place revered by pilgrims.
Ukash Ata was a pupil of the Prophet Mohammed and an Islamic preacher. Legend says that neither swords nor arrows could hurt him, but his enemies learnt that he was vulnerable while praying and cut his head off while he was reading a Mohammedan prayer. Ukash Ata’s head rolled away and fell into a cleft in the mountain and from there it was transported to Mecca by an underground river.
Later a tombstone, 21 m long, was placed over the spot where Ukash Ata shed his blood and a well was built into
the cleft. It is believed that only a person without sin can lift a bucket full of water from the bottom of the well; a sinner will pull up an empty one.
On the southern fringes of the city of Turkistan is the mausoleum of Gaukhar Ana, a daughter of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, who is said to have been a healer. Today it is a site of pilgrimage where people come to pray for a miracle cure for their diseases. The Mausoleum of Imam Marcozy, built of unfired bricks in the 19th century, is 10 km from Turkistan on the outskirts of Shubanak. Imam Marcozy was a contemporary of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and shared his teachings. As he always wore blue clothes, he was also known as Koktondy Ata (in Kazakh koktondy means ‘in blue sheepskin coat’).
MOSQUES AND MADRASAHS
Once Turkistan and its surrounding cities were a centre of Islamic teaching. While most of the medieval madrasahs and mosques have disappeared, many built in the 19th century are still standing. Most are protected by the government and have been turned into museums.
The mosque-madrasah of Appak Ishan, built at the end of the 19th century in the village of Shayan in the Ordabasy district has an impressive number of cupolas. There are 35. It is part of an architectural complex that took several decades to build. The work was started by Kossym Ishan, continued by his son Seidakhmet, and completed by his grandson, Appak Ishan. The mosque and madrasah, where up to 50 students were studying by the end of the 19th century, were named after him. During the Soviet times the madrasah rooms were used as storage and a dormitory.
The Ishan Bazaar mosque, with similar architecture dating back to the end of the
