RWANDA’S MARA GROUP RELEASES FIRST ‘MADE IN AFRICA’ SMARTPHONE

-

RWANDAN PRESIDENT Paul Kagame has hailed Mara Group as the first smartphone manufacturer in the country following the release of two new devices.

The Mara X and Mara Z are now available on the market, respectively costing around $190 and $130 and both using Google’s Android operating system.

While reportedly being the first ‘Made in Africa’ smartphone, it is not the cheapest available to consumers, with Samsung selling handsets for as cheap as $54.

According to Mara Group CEO Ashish Thakkar, the company’s $24 million factory can produce up to 1,200 phones a day.
