According to Pema, one of the biggest problems regarding the implementation of sustainability practices is implementing such a practice in isolation.

Sustainability must be a collaborative integrated process. This is down to the languages of both sustainability and business not always coinciding with one another. Open communication and creating awareness are key. Incorporating sustainability practices into all areas of the business is another aspect of this company-wide communication.

“Right from the start, you need to make sure that you have high-level management, executive management and board commitment, support and input to the process,” Pema adds. “A dual process of top-down and bottom-up consolidation is required for successful implementation.”
