Kenya’s Lamu Port opens for business
FOLLOWING A commissioning ceremony presided over by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, a new deep-water port on the island of Lamu has officially launched operation after welcoming its first ships. A $3 billion project, the Lamu Port is an essential component of LAPSSET – the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Corridor that was originally launched in 2012. The corridor is expected to streamline the transition of goods between Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia. Prior to inauguration, the 32-berth port has faced opposition from local businessmen dependent on both tourism and finishing, alongside environmental groups.
However, President Kenyatta announced that the port would be massively advantageous, with
“the potential to become a premier transhipment hub for all cargo destined for the continent.”
