Egyptian Court appeals Suez Canal claim over stuck ship
THE ISMAILIA Economic Court has stated that it lacks the jurisdiction to pursue the Suez Canal Authority’s demands regarding compensation that led to the seizure of the Ever Given which blocked the Suez Canal in March.
The dispute between the ship’s owner and the canal authority continues regarding who was at fault for the blockage caused in the maritime route connecting the Mediterranean and the Red Sea that is responsible for 10 percent of the world’s trade flow.
The appeals chamber at Ismailia has deferred the case to a lower court to judge the settlement of the compensation claim and rule on the legality of the seizure of the ship.
Most recently, the Canal Authority has requested a lowered figure of $550 million in compensation to cover the cost of salvage operations, lost transit fees and stalled canal traffic during the week-long blockage.
